The Sacred Hunt is the Spiritborn class quest in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred. It unlocks the unique Spirit Hall specialization that defines how your Spiritborn plays, and once you have finished it on your account, future Spiritborn characters get access to Spirit Hall automatically. The quest is marked as a Priority Quest and becomes available once your Spiritborn reaches level 15 and can travel to Gea Kul in Kehjistan.
This guide walks through every step of The Sacred Hunt, explains the confusing brazier puzzle, and gives practical combat tips for defeating The Beast at the end.
How to Unlock The Sacred Hunt
To start The Sacred Hunt, you need to meet a few conditions:
- Create a Spiritborn character in the Vessel of Hatred content.
- Reach at least level 15 on that Spiritborn.
- Gain access to Kehjistan and the town of Gea Kul.
When you meet these requirements, a Priority Quest marker appears in Gea Kul. Track it and head to the quest giver, Tarka, the Emissary, to begin the Sacred Hunt questline.
If you already completed The Sacred Hunt on a previous Spiritborn after the account wide change to class quests, Spirit Hall may already be unlocked for new Spiritborns, and the quest might not appear again. In that case you can open your class mechanic menu and use Spirit Hall immediately.
Finding Tarka the Emissary and Following the Trail
The opening part of The Sacred Hunt plays like an investigation quest with short travel segments and light combat.
- Talk to Tarka in Gea Kul
You will find Tarka near the central area of Gea Kul. Speak with her to learn about the disturbance involving spirits and hunters. - Head to the Central Plateau
Follow the quest marker northeast out of Gea Kul into the Central Plateau. Tarka relocates there, and you will find her near some broken ceramics. Inspect the strange smashed ceramics on the ground, then talk to Tarka again to advance the quest. - Travel to Hakan’s Oasis
The trail leads southeast to Hakan’s Oasis. Here you encounter Ito, who dies after warning you about Tarka’s situation. This sets the tone that things are going wrong in the border between the physical world and the spirit realm. - Track Tarka to the Island
Continue following the quest markers to investigate unusual tracks leading west. They eventually guide you to a small island slightly to the south, where Tarka is standing, clearly shaken but focused on what needs to be done. - Defeat the Invaders and Enter the Portal
After a short conversation, enemies spawn around you. Clear all the invaders. Once the area is safe, a portal appears nearby. Interact with it to enter the Spirit Realm dungeon where the real quest begins.
Entering the Spirit Realm and Understanding the Brazier Mechanic
Inside the Spirit Realm you fight alongside Tarka and interact with ritual braziers that test your connection to the guardian spirits. This is where many players get stuck, because the game expects you to use emotes instead of simply clicking the braziers.
Immediately after entering the portal:
- Talk to Tarka again.
- She brings you to a ritual brazier with a glowing interaction zone.
- Instead of clicking the brazier itself, you must use a specific emote while standing near it to progress.
The game gives you a short hint, but it is easy to miss. The mechanic looks like a normal environmental interaction, yet behaves differently, so understanding the emote requirement saves a lot of confusion.
How to Solve the Ritual Brazier Puzzle
There are two ritual braziers in The Sacred Hunt, and each requires a different emote.
First Brazier
- Stand inside the marked circle near the brazier.
- Open your Action Wheel:
- Keyboard and mouse: press E by default.
- Controller: press Up on the d pad.
- Select the “Help” emote.
- Wait for the emote to fully play while you are still inside the circle.
When you do this correctly, the ritual completes and the barrier ahead dissipates, allowing you to continue deeper into the Spirit Realm.
Second Brazier
Later in the dungeon, Tarka lights a second ritual brazier.
- Again, stand inside the brazier’s circle.
- Open the Action Wheel.
- Use the “Thanks” emote.
- Let the emote finish.
If either emote is missing from your wheel, you can customize the wheel in the same menu and slot the required emote before trying again. As long as you are inside the circle when the emote completes, the ritual will succeed.
Many players try to click on the brazier repeatedly or assume it is bugged, when in reality the emote is the key. Keeping this in mind makes the entire puzzle trivial.
Navigating The Sacred Hunt Dungeon
Between the braziers and the final boss, you fight through a series of narrow corridors and ambushes:
- Expect tight spaces with enemies spawning from multiple angles.
- You will regularly see mixed packs of ranged casters and melee lungers.
- There are several moments where Tarka triggers more spirits after you think a pack is finished.
To stay safe in this section:
- Prioritize ranged enemies first so you are not chipped down while dealing with melee.
- Use crowd control skills on clusters of enemies at choke points.
- Keep an eye on potion charges. It is worth backtracking a few steps to grab a dropped potion before moving on.
- If you are struggling, consider lowering the World Tier before entering the dungeon, then raising it again afterwards.
This portion of the quest is fairly straightforward, but careless players can be overwhelmed by back to back ambushes.
How to Defeat The Beast in The Sacred Hunt
The final encounter of the quest is against The Beast, a spirit infused monster that uses large sweeping attacks and a unique invulnerability mechanic. Understanding the spirit totem phase is crucial.
Phase 1 – Damaging The Beast
At the start of the fight:
- The Beast uses traditional melee and area attacks.
- Focus on learning its windups and using your Evade to stay out of danger.
- Save your strongest cooldowns and defensive skills for later, since the fight has multiple stages.
Once you bring The Beast down to roughly 80 percent health, it becomes invulnerable and triggers the spirit totem mechanic.
Spirit Totems and Corrupted Spirits
Four spirit totems appear along the north side of the arena.
- Interact with one of the totems to begin channeling its power.
- Corrupted spirits spawn and attack you while you are under the totem’s effect.
- Defeat these spirits while avoiding the moving hazards in the arena.
When the last corrupted spirit dies, your skill bar temporarily changes. All your abilities are replaced by a special spirit boon attack tied to the totem you chose.
Using Spirit Boons to Break Immunity
To remove The Beast’s invulnerability:
- With the spirit boon active, hit The Beast repeatedly using the new attack.
- Once you have done enough spirit damage, its barrier shatters and it becomes vulnerable to your normal skills again.
- The fight returns to a more standard DPS phase.
The Beast’s health bar is divided into several sections, and you must repeat this process multiple times:
- Damage The Beast until it becomes invulnerable.
- Interact with another spirit totem.
- Kill corrupted spirits.
- Use the resulting spirit boon to break the barrier again.
After all four spirit totems have been used and the health bar has been fully depleted, The Beast finally goes down.
Combat Tips for The Beast
Some practical tips to make the encounter smoother:
- Stay mobile. Most of The Beast’s attacks can be avoided if you keep moving and watch for ground indicators.
- Do not tunnel vision the boss. During the corrupted spirit waves, killing adds quickly is safer than trying to kite forever.
- Use defensive skills and movement abilities during the add waves, where damage spikes are more likely.
- On melee focused Spiritborn builds, time your engages between attack cycles rather than standing in front of the boss constantly.
- If your gear is weak at level 15, run a couple of nearby events or dungeons first to pick up extra armor and weapons before attempting the fight.
Recommended Preparation and Build Considerations
Even though The Sacred Hunt is available at level 15, it is worth preparing a bit so the quest feels smooth rather than painful.
- Aim for upgraded healing potions appropriate to your level if possible.
- Pick up a strong weapon upgrade before starting the dungeon. Early Spiritborn power spikes are often tied to a simple weapon upgrade.
- Favor survivability and crowd control over pure glass cannon damage for this quest. The add waves and ambushes punish low armor and low life.
- Slot at least one reliable escape or defensive skill, such as a movement dash, a damage reduction aura, or a temporary shield.
If you like to play on higher World Tiers, it can still be worth dropping down one tier for The Sacred Hunt, then going back up once Spirit Hall is unlocked. Having your full class mechanic active is more important than proving a point at level 15.
Rewards for Completing The Sacred Hunt
Finishing The Sacred Hunt grants several important rewards:
- Spirit Hall specialization unlocked
Spirit Hall lets your Spiritborn attune to up to two Guardian Spirits, each offering powerful passive bonuses and sometimes active effects that shape your entire build. It is the core class mechanic for Spiritborn and greatly increases your power and flexibility. - Account wide unlock for future Spiritborns
Once The Sacred Hunt is completed on your account (after class quests were made account wide), future Spiritborn characters get immediate access to Spirit Hall without repeating the quest, even in later seasons. - Experience, gold, and renown
Like other Priority Quests, you receive a solid chunk of XP, some gold, and Kehjistan renown, which helps with long term progression.
Because Spirit Hall strongly influences how your Spiritborn plays, it is worth prioritizing The Sacred Hunt as soon as you are comfortable with your build. With the brazier emote puzzle and The Beast’s totem mechanics understood, the quest becomes a flavorful, story rich experience rather than a frustrating roadblock, and you walk out with one of the most impactful power spikes in the entire Spiritborn leveling journey.
